| Quebec is a province in east-central Canada | |
All the main cities are located in southern Canada, where there are important industry and farm lands. My trip began in old Quebec. The city is located along the St. Laurence River about eight hundred miles from the Atlantic Ocean. The first information that I could receive was that Quebec had been founded as a French trading port in 1608. It was the second permanent settlement in the country. Today over seven million people are living in the province of Quebec. Nearly half of these people live within the city. Part of Quebec is built on a cliff that rises over three hundred feet above the river. This part is called ‘Upper Town’. The other part of the city is known as ‘Lower Town’. It spreads along a narrow strip of land between the cliff and the river. Most of the older homes, churches, shops and public buildings of Quebec are gathered in Upper Town. At the very top of the cliff I could see the Citadel, a great stone fortress that had been built to guard the city from enemy attack. Old Quebec is full of tourists’ attractions and among them I managed to see Montmorency Falls, the Basilica of Sainte-Anne-Beaupre, the Mont-Sainte-Anne ski resort, and the Ice Hotel. Another interesting building is the Chateau Frontenac that is actually a large hotel built in the style of a French castle. From this hotel one can see much of Lower Town and the harbor. It is amazing to reach the lower part of the city walking along steep stairways and narrow, winding streets. Buildings and houses are very close to one another. Not long ago people of this part of Canada earned their living by working in paper mills and clothing factories, tobacco plants and brickyards. Today most jobs are concentrated in public administration, services, commerce, transport and tourism. This province is famous for information and communication technologies, biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry. They expected the population of the Quebec province will reach 8 million people by 2012. |
